After our visit to the DB Museum in Koblenz, we travelled on to Ettlingen, near Karlsruhe, in the late afternoon of the same day. Although it was already late, we visited the Karlsruhe steam nostalgia section of the Ulm Railway Enthusiasts before checking into our hotel. The next day, a special trip to Neustadt an der Weinstraße was on the programme, so we were able to watch the train crew firing up the steam locomotive for the special train.
Decisive for the journey were the two carriages that transported us and in which we were catered for during the trip – two E36s. While one of the two was a 2nd-class express train carriage, the other bore the sign dining car and featured dining areas, a bar and a fully functioning kitchen. In terms of colour, the carriage was in the classic, albeit already slightly faded, purple-red of the Bundesbahn sleeping and dining cars.
The journey was carried out with 58 311 (G12), which was made available by Dampfnostalgie Karlsruhe. This had the advantage that the Asian delegation was able to experience a steam locomotive live. Under the expert guidance of driver Manfred Welzel, the producer and his entourage were given a detailed explanation of the function and interaction of all the parts on the inspection pit of the DGEG in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. A great idea, because it means that the models currently in production and future models can be built even closer to the prototype with an understanding of the technology.
